Image Uploader, Editor And Admin Menus Are Broken After Activation

If you have uploaded your theme, and now the image editor, editor, and admin menus are broken, please read the information below.

Symptoms: I just activated the theme and when I go into the admin screen one or more of the following conditions exist:

  • Media Image uploader fails to upload media.
  • My editor is not displaying icons correctly, or is otherwise not usable.
  • When I hover over an admin menu link, none of the submenus display.
  • When I open a console (such as Firefox Firebug), I see "jQuery not defined" errors.

Likely Causes:

  • You have a plugin that is causing a conflict.
  • WordPress uses a performance optimization feature that concatenate all JavaScript resources into a single get request. It is not important that you know exactly what that means. What is important is that there is a pretty easy fix that will likely solve the issue.

  • Disable all plugins and check to see if the condition still exists.

If the condition still exists after trying the above, please try the following:

  • Open up your WordPress installation folder wp-config.php file in a plain text editor.
  • Save a copy of the file just in case something goes wrong and you need to reuse it.
  • Add the following at the end of the wp-config.php file: define( ‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false );
  • Make sure you do not add any additional spaces or lines after the last entry in your file.
  • Save the file and upload back to your Wordpress installation folder.
  • Refresh your admin screen and see if the problem is resolved.
