How To Update The Theme

06/15/2016

There are two ways to update your theme. The first and easiest method is to simply register your purchase to make use of our automatic theme updater method. The second is the traditional method, using FTP, that involves manual steps. Before you update, it is best practice to always check our update notes and make a backup of your theme folder, files and database. See the information below for each method.

Method 1: The Auto Updater

IMPORTANT NOTE – This method is only for Avada 3.5 or higher.

The easiest way to update your theme is to use our Automatic Theme Updater, which can only be used after you register your product. Once you have registered the product and whenever we release a theme update, you will receive a notification message in your WordPress Dashboard > Updates tab. Auto Updating The Theme – Once you have setup the auto updater, you will be notified via the WordPress Dashboard > Updates tab when a new theme update is ready. WordPress auto checks for new updates every 12 hours, or you can click the ‘Check Again’ button to force WordPress to fetch all available updates.

Updating The Plugins – After you update the theme, you will see a notification message to update the required Fusion Core plugin. Follow the on screen prompts to update it. Navigate to the Avada > Plugins tab in your WordPress Dashboard to complete the process.

Method 2: Manual Update

This method requires more steps and manual work. First, you need to manually download the new theme package from your ThemeForest account. Once you have the new theme package, you can choose to upload the theme via WordPress or via FTP. Please see the information below for how to download new files, and install it via WordPress or via FTP.

How To Download New Theme Files From ThemeForest

Step 1 – Log into your ThemeForest account and navigate to your Downloads tab. Find the Avada theme purchase.

Step 2 – Click the Download button choose to either download the ‘Installable WordPress file’, which is just the WordPress file, or choose to download ‘All Files & Documentation’ which is the entire package.

Step 3 – After downloading the files, you need to decide if you want to install the update via FTP or via WordPress. For directions on both methods, please continue reading below.

How To Update Avada Using FTP

IMPORTANT NOTE
First, backup your theme files and database and then delete your old theme folder. This ensures that any deprecated files are not present which could lead to update issues. Also make sure that the folder is named Avada

Step 1 – Log into your server and then navigate to the wp-content > themes folder and backup your Avada theme folder by saving it to your computer, or you can choose to simply delete it. Your content will not be lost or erased.

Step 2 – Retrieve the Avada.zip file from your new ThemeForest download and extract the file to get the updated Avada theme folder.

Step 3 – After extracting the updated Avada theme folder, simply drag and drop the new Avada theme folder into wp-content > themes folder location.

Step 4 – Lastly, update the Fusion Core plugin. You will see a notification message notifying you that a new version of the Fusion Core plugin is available and ready for update. Follow the onscreen prompt to complete the plugin update process.

How To Update Avada Via WordPress

IMPORTANT NOTE

Please note: Your content will not be lost or erased.

Step 2 – Now you are ready to delete the old Avada theme. To do this, hover with your mouse over the theme thumbnail, click ‘Theme Details’ and in the corresponding window click the red ‘Delete’ button.
Please note: Your content will not be lost or erased.

Step 3 – Retrieve the new ‘Avada.zip’ file from your ThemeForest account downloads section. If you have downloaded the Main Files from ThemeForest, you need to unzip the master file to access the secondary Avada.zip file.

Common Issues & Questions

1. Are You Sure You Want To Do This?

If you get the “Are You Sure You Want To Do This” message when installing Avada.zip file via WordPress, it means you have an upload file size limit. Install the theme via FTP if this happens, or call your hosting company and ask them to increase the limit.

2. Theme install failed ‘Destination Folder Already Exists’

This happens because WordPress only allows you to have one theme with the same name when uploading the theme via WordPress admin. We recommend you to setup the auto updater (see info above) to get around this, or you can update the theme via FTP.
